JOB: Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Sports and Leisure Studies

Canada Research Chair (Tier II) in Sports and Leisure Studies

TRU invites applications for a Tier II Canada Research Chair position in Sports and Leisure Studies. This call is part of a multi-disciplinary call for two new positions, with this as one of our top priorities.

Kamloops terms itself ‘Tournament Capital of Canada’, and TRU is a major beneficiary of sports-related facility funding. A project currently under construction will establish significant new facilities on the TRU campus (plans ). TRU also maintains a successful Tourism and Outdoor Recreation school with a number of faculty actively involved in research.

The successful candidate will establish and lead a research centre as part of this new $38M facility expansion, with a strong, externally funded program in any relevant SSHRC-funded field. This might include social psychology, outdoor recreation, sports psychology, sociology, or any other of the applicable social sciences.

The Chair will be expected to supervise graduate students and teach undergraduate courses, although with a significantly reduced load.

This appointment will be at the Assistant or Associate Professor level, depending on the qualifications of the successful candidate. Applicants must hold a Ph.D., possess excellent research records, and have the potential to be leaders in their fields.

Initial review of applications begins Sept 1, 2005. As with all CRC positions, the appointment is subject to review by the CRC Secretariat in Ottawa. TRU is planning to submit nominations to Ottawa in September 2005. The nominees will be informed of the results in February 2006. A December nomination is also a possibility, although the September date is preferred.

The goals of the CRC program are to promote leading edge research and the training of highly qualified personnel. A Tier II Chair is expected to develop a world-class research program within 5-10 years of taking up the position. Administrative and teaching loads are reduced to permit a primary focus on research. Details of criteria and the nomination process are available on the CRC website.

The successful applicants will work with TRU to develop Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) proposals that will go forward with their nominations. CFI funds provide dedicated infrastructure to support the Chairs' research programs.

Application Process:
Interested applicants should send a curriculum vitae, brief 5-year research plan, examples of significant research contributions, and names and contact information for three potential referees to:
