JOB: Chairperson, Health and Human Performance

Health: Department of Health and Human Performance Chairperson. Applicants are invited for a 12-month, tenure-track position of Department Chair, Department of Health and Human Performance at The University of Tennessee at Martin. The Department of Health and Human Performance offers a B.S. in Health and Human Performance with concentrations in Exercise Science; Fitness and Health Promotion; Licensure K-12; Sports Management and Athletic Training. The successful candidate will have an earned doctorate in a discipline included in the department curricula; successful teaching experience at the collegiate level with public elementary and/or secondary school teaching experience preferred; eligibility for appointment at the rank of associate professor; demonstration of or potential for success in administration; supervision, and leadership; strong interpersonal and communication skills; thorough command of curriculum development processes; commitment to recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty and student body; commitment to scholarship and service; experience with NCATE and CAAHEP processes preferred; experience with state regulatory agency concerning teacher licensure preferred. Responsibilities include administration of the Department of Health and Human Performance; academic leadership; administering instructional programs and student recruitment.

The position appointment date is January 1, 2006 or August 1, 2006 dependent upon successful candidate availability. CONFERENCE: All Blacks and the 'Mother Country' 1905-2005

All Blacks and the 'Mother Country' 1905-2005

To mark the centenary of the first All Blacks tour of the UK, a special conference will be held at the Museum of Rugby, Twickenham on Monday 12 September 2005.

Hosted by the Museum of Rugby, De Montfort University and Southampton University, the conference's featured speakers will be:

The International Centre for Sports History and Culture is pleased to announce that the fifth annual ‘Historians on Sport’ symposium will be held on Saturday, 29 October here at De Montfort University, Leicester.

The speakers will be:
- Professor Callum Brown, Dundee University, author of ‘The Social History of Relgion in Scotland since 1730’.
- Dr Lawrence Goldman, St Peter’s College Oxford, editor of the ‘Oxford Dictionary of National Biography’.
- Dr Trevor Griffiths, Edinburgh University, author of ‘The Lancashire Working Class, 1880-1930’.
- Dr Joanna de Groot, York University, author of ‘Doing Things Differently? Problems and Prospects for Women's Studies in the 1990s’.
- David Kynaston, author of ‘The City of London’.

CFP: European Popular Culture (9/30/05; encyclopedia)

Authors are sought for a few remaining chapters of the Europe volume of
the Encyclopedia of World Popular Culture, a six-volume set under contract
with the Greenwood Publishing Group.

Each volume will consist of narrative chapters, similar in style and
scope to the individual entries in the ?American Popular Culture through
History? series (also Greenwood). Starting with the onset of mass media culture
during the turn of the 19th to the 20th century, each essay should
provide an overview over its topic, covering all European countries. The average
length of entries will be between 12,500 and 13,000 words, including
notes and a resource guide. The submission deadline for completed essays is
September 30, 2005. Upon publication of the volume, Greenwood will pay
authors an honorarium.

The following chapters need assignments:

* Architecture
* Love, Sex & Marriage
* Sports
* Transportation & Travel

Interested authors should provide evidence of research background in

Socio-Cultural Study of Exercise and Sport

The School of Human Kinetics at the University of British Columbia invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in socio-cultural study of exercise and sport at the Assistant Professor level. Appointment at a higher rank may be considered for a woman or member of a designated equity group with exceptional qualifications. All qualified persons are encouraged to apply.

Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Human Kinetics or a closely related field with a background in socio-cultural studies and a promising record, or outstanding potential, in research and teaching. Expertise in one of internationalism, globalization, or multiculturalism as these pertain to exercise, physical activity or sport is strongly preferred. A background in social theory and research methodologies would be an asset. The appointment will become effective July 01, 2006, and will be subject to final budgetary approval. The salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

The successful candidate will teach undergraduate and graduate courses in their areas of specialty, supervise graduate students, develop a well-defined program of research, secure external research funding, and contribute to the affairs of the School.

The School of Human Kinetics is an interdisciplinary academic unit focused on social, natural and biomedical science approaches to sport, physical activity and health across the lifespan. Rank: Assistant Professor Tenure-Track – Historical/Philosophical/Socio-Cultural Foundations of
Human Movement

Qualifications: Applicant academic training in Kinesiology, Physical Education or closely related field of study; academic emphasis in areas of history, philosophy, and/or sociology/socio-cultural foundations of sport, exercise and dance; ability to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in these areas; evidence of research ability and/or ongoing scholarly productivity; demonstrated ability to work collaboratively within and outside the university; effective teaching and communication skills; evidence of a broad view of Kinesiology valuing equally the biological, aesthetic and socio-cultural knowledge of human movement; evidence of cultural sensitivity, cultural competence and experience within a multicultural and multiethnic environment. Applicants must have Ph.D. in hand, or near completion, at time of appointment. Applicants who do not have a Ph.D. at time of appointment will be appointed as a one-year lecturer, converted to tenure track at completion of the doctorate. A Ph.D. is required for the granting of tenure. Preferred qualifications include: prior successful college teaching experience.
CSUN is a Learning Centered University. The successful candidate will be expected to join faculty and staff in a commitment to active learning, to the assessment of learning outcomes, and to multiple pathways that enable students to graduate.
At time of appointment, the successful candidate, if not a U.S. citizen, must have authorization from the Bureau of Citizenship and Immigration Services to work in the United States.

Responsibilities: Teach undergraduate and graduate Kinesiology major courses in the areas of historical, philosophical, and/or socio-cultural foundations of human movement forms including elite sport, mass sport as well as influences on sedentary/active lifestyle choices throughout the lifespan; advise undergraduate and graduate students; interact with other faculty to assure the appropriate integration of historical, philosophical, and/or socio-cultural concepts to other curricular offerings; develop a line of scholarly research; serve on departmental, college, and university committees as needed.
