GRAD PROGRAM: Ithaca College, Master of Science in Sport Management

Department of Sport Management and Media
Master’s Program – Sport Management

The Ithaca College Department of Sport Management and Media is accepting applications for admission into the master’s degree program in sport management. Graduate assistantships are available. Deadline for applying to the program is April 1, 2006.

Master of Science in Sport Management
The Sport Management and Media Department at Ithaca College prepares graduate students for a variety of positions in the sport industry. The goal of the faculty and department is to create a collaborative and nurturing learning environment for analyzing and resolving the challenges in the business and culture of sport. To successfully manage today’s increasingly sophisticated amateur and professional sport organizations, a broad-based academic perspective and a range of practical experiences are needed. Our program provides a rich, interdisciplinary examination of the social, ethical, economic, legal, and political principles that affect sports organizations. It also provides hands-on internship experiences that allow you to apply those principles.

Candidates for the master of science degree in sport management can choose either the thesis or non-thesis option. The flexibility of our program allows students to match their learning experiences to their individual academic strengths and career plans. The curriculum for both options consists of 30 credit hours of graduate study offered within a 12-month period.

All master’s degree candidates must complete six required courses (18 credit hours) -- including Research Methods, Sport Law, Sport Economics, Sport Marketing, and Sport in Society -- and six credits of graduate electives -- three chosen from the Department of Sport Management and Media and three from offerings available in the School of Business, the Park School, and the School of Health Sciences and Human Performance. Those choosing the thesis option will complete a six-credit thesis project. The non-thesis option requires the completion of a six-credit internship.
Classes begin in mid August and continue through early May. Internships and thesis projects may be completed in the May through August summer sessions. To obtain more information about our programs and graduate studies at Ithaca College, visit the graduate studies website and request program materials.

For more information, contact: Ellen J. Staurowsky, Ed.D. Professor, at staurows@ithaca.edu and visit the graduate program web site at: http://departments.ithaca.edu/smm/grad/

Graduate Assistantships: A limited number of graduate assistantships will be awarded each semester based on the applicant’s scholastic record. Graduate assistants may be asked to help administer undergraduate classes, conduct research, assist with the athletic department and teams, and assist with departmental activities and events. You can apply for an assistantship when you apply for admission at http://www.ithaca.edu/gradstudies/apply.php.

STUDY ABROAD: Sport & Culture in the Global Marketplace Study Abroad

In conjunction with the University of Maryland, the University of
Memphis is once again offering the 'Sport & Culture in the Global
Marketplace' Study Abroad program in London, England, July 16-29, 2006.
In addition to formal academic lectures and readings pertaining to
various aspects of producing, consuming, and managing sport in a global
setting, the course features addresses from and discussions with
industry executives and 'behind the scenes' tours. Students can earn 6
credits (2 courses) for participating in the program (and some former
students have even gone on to gain positions at the organizations that
we visit!)

A major reason for the success of the program in previous years has been
the diversity of students that have participated from different
universities across North America, including Arkansas State, Clemson,
George Washington, Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, Maryland, Mount Union,
Rice, San Francisco, Towson, and Windsor. I am hoping that you would be
willing to publicize the program among folks that might be interested at
your institution. If you could post details, and/or contact
directly any students that you feel may find this program interesting, I
would be most appreciative. Please have anybody that would like more
information to contact me directly, or visit the website,
http://hss.memphis.edu/london2006. There are also quotes from past
students and photos from previous trips on the website.
Best wishes,
John

CFP: The Social Construction of Fat, SSJ Special Issue

The Social Construction of Fat

Call for papers for a Special Issue of SSJ.

Guest Editor: Margaret Carlisle Duncan, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

The Social Construction of Fat:

This special issue calls for manuscripts that focus on a sociological treatment of fat and the fat body, including its biomedical construction as obese or overweight—and hence, fundamentally unhealthy—; its social construction as morally suspect, self-indulgent, undisciplined, out of control, lazy, greedy, and repellent; and the social meanings that people attribute to the “obesity epidemic.”

Obesity is a salient theme in both popular writing and in scientific research these days. One can hardly pick up a newspaper or journal without seeing some reference to this fearsome “epidemic that’s sweeping the country” which, we are told, affects fully two-thirds of the adult population and increasing numbers of children. Experts offer dire warnings, predicting that in 2050, 100 percent of the American population will be overweight or obese. The grave pronouncements by a string of Surgeons General beginning with C. Everett Koop continuing up to the present, and by the CDC lend official credibility to such warnings. Novels such as Wally Lamb’s She’s Come Undone, Margaret Atwood’s Lady Oracle, Jennifer Weiner’s Good in Bed and, more humorously, Bridget Jones’s Diary and The End of Reason suggest Western culture’s obsession with body ideals and reveal the difficulty of being fat in a society that reveres thin, hard physiques. With the exception of Gard and Wright’s The Obesity Epidemic: Science, Morality and Ideology, few full-dress treatments of fat as a sociological phenomenon and its relationship to physical activity and/or body culture have occurred.

Possible Topics:

All submissions must be scholarly analyses grounded in sociological theory and be connected in some way to sport , exercise, physical activity, leisure and/or body culture. This issue will consider empirical (data-based) papers and new theoretical approaches relating to overweight, obesity, and fat. Possible topics for scholarly sociological analysis include (but are not limited to) the intersection of fat with sexuality, disability, race, ethnicity, class, and age; the globalization of fat; fat as cultural habitus; the fat body as transgressive spectacle; fat and the panoptic gaze, the medicalization of fat; social movements such as “fat but fit,” the obesity epidemic as a moral panic; fat activism and sport; fat practices and representations, and, other subjects that explicitly address fat as a sociological construction and articulate its relationship to physical activity.

Submissions
Manuscripts must be submitted to http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hk_ssj

All manuscripts must follow the editorial guidelines identified in the Sociology of Sport Journal's Instructions for Contributors and will be subject to the usual blinded review process. Authors must indicate in their cover letter that this manuscript is being submitted for the special issue.

Deadline for submission: March 1, 2007.
