JOB: Department Chair, Old Dominion

The Department and College: The Department of Exercise Science, Sport, Physical Education, and Recreation (ESPER, http://education.odu.edu/esper/) at Old Dominion University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Department Chair to begin July 25, 2006 or earlier. ESPER is one of five departments in the Darden College of Education (http://www.odu.edu/educ/education/index.html) and offers on-campus baccalaureate and master's degree programs in exercise science, health and physical education teacher preparation, recreation/tourism studies, and sport management as well as a master's degree program in athletic training. Future plans include emphasis areas in a newly approved Ph.D. in Education program. ESPER currently has 16 full-time faculty members; approximately 50 adjunct faculty members; eight department-funded graduate assistants; two administrative support employees; approximately 475 undergraduate majors; and approximately 85 graduate majors. A planned building renovation will include state-ofthe-art instructional and research facilities. Old Dominion University is a Carnegie Foundation research-extensive institution focusing on becoming one of the top 100 public doctoral institutions.

Required Qualifications: Requirements include an earned doctorate in one of the disciplines offered in ESPER; eligibility for appointment as an associate or full professor; evidence of previous university leadership and administrative experience; significant involvement in appropriate professional associations; demonstrated commitments to diversity and faculty participation in program governance and decision-making; demonstrated record of grant procurement and scholarship in a focus area; evidence of effective teaching; and familiarity with ESPER academic programs.

Preferred Qualifications: The Darden College of Education seeks faculty members who demonstrate a commitment to quality education through innovation, collaboration, and professionalism. Candidates for this position should also have experience with the following: university collaborative efforts involving public schools, postsecondary institutions and agencies; innovative instructional programs including distance education technologies; state program approval and licensure procedures; effective integration of technology; and accreditation processes of ESPER curricula (NCATE, NASPE, NASSM, NATA, ACSM, NRPA/AALR).
