The School of Human Kinetics at the University of British Columbia
invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track position in
socio-cultural study of exercise and sport at the Assistant
Professor level. Appointment at a higher rank may be considered for
a woman or member of a designated equity group with exceptional

Applicants must have an earned doctorate in Human Kinetics or a
closely related field with a background in socio-cultural studies
and a promising record, or outstanding potential, in research and

SPORTS RESEARCH AND PRIVATE LIVES

From Antiquity to modernity the lives of athletes have had great appeal to common people. In odes and biographies sporting excellence has been hailed as a sign of human character, strength and determination. The modern label “stars” signifies their societal function as lodestars. Their attitude to life works as inspiration in ordinary people’s pursuit of success. Their achievements exemplify what living in the modern world is all about: efficiency, productivity, and rationality. So conservative pedagogues praise sport as educational.

The public interest in the lives of sports stars is not at all matched by scholarly attention to the fate of athletes. The exploitation of sport stars has been addressed in general terms, but there is still plenty of research waiting to be done on the personal outcome of sporting lives. Life history of former athletes may generate valuable insights into sport’s complex consequences. It is obvious that some high-performance athletes do extremely well after ending their career while others leave the limelight to turn into alcoholics, drug addicts, even suicide victims. This may be due to intrinsic factors. However, there are also extrinsic factors that influence the private lives of high-performance athletes. One is the media hype around sport celebrities. Another thing is the increasing measures being taken to control and restrict the lives of athletes.

Not all sport is high performance. Participation in sport on lower levels also play a significant role in forming identities and networks. Hence, life histories of recreational gymnasts and athletes should also be analysed if the influence of sport on private lives shall be understood in depth.

The intention of the seminar/conference is to present and discuss key aspects of the broad demarcation line between sport and privacy, as well as theoretical and methodological implications involved in the growing research field of sports biography.

Professor Emeritus Heanon Wilkins was Miami University’s first full-time African-American faculty member. A distinguished professor of Spanish & Portuguese and Black World Studies, Professor Wilkins received Miami’s highest honors in teaching, research, and service and we honor him with the Wilkins Fellows program. The Wilkins Fellows program provides a culturally diverse faculty with mentoring, a salary equivalent to that of a Miami University faculty member at the same rank (instructor or visiting assistant professor), $3000-$5000 for research-related expenses, the potential of obtaining a future tenure-track faculty position at Miami University, and an opportunity to live and work in a welcoming community of enthusiastic scholars. During the 15-week (one semester) or 9-month (two-semester, full academic year) appointment, Wilkins Fellows conduct research and enjoy a reduced teaching load (one or two courses per semester).

Any analysis of public policy statements and interventions of (national and
sub-national level governments) worldwide belies the familiar cliché that sport
and politics should not mix . Sport is thus an increasingly significant
contributor to the public policy agendas of a diverse range of countries and
governments. In the UK, for example, governments on both sides of the political
spectrum have, over the last 10 years or so, invested large amounts of public
money into the development of elite athletes, school sport and physical
education, and initiatives to raise physical activity levels of the population.
Research activity in this field spans a broad array of interests and
perspectives (e.g. public policy analyses, comparative studies, sport and
international politics, sport, urban regeneration and mega-events, sport and
physical education, and sport and social exclusion). Papers that include a
comparative element are particularly welcome, however, given the
interdisciplinary nature of the field, and the broad array of interrelated
interests indicated above, we would also welcome the following type of papers:
macro and meso level public policy analyses, socio-political research, case
studies, empirical work and those from different methodological and theoretical
standpoints.

It is anticipated that some of the indicative questions for debate and
discussion in the workshop will include: Why are governments investing
increasingly large amounts of political and financial resources into sport? What
are the intended social, political and policy outcomes of such investment? Is
this the most efficient and effective allocation of scarce financial resources?
What are the relative roles of national and sub-national governments? And, given
the historically weak position of sport as a public policy issue: Is sport
policy now sufficiently embedded to withstand a downturn in government
interest?

JOB: Professor of Sport and Fitness Management

The Health, Physical Education, and Athletic department at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside invites applications for a full-time tenure track assistant professor of Sport and Fitness Management for the academic year 2006-2007.

Required Qualifications:

A Ph.D., Ed.D., or equivalent degree by the time of appointment. ABD with nearly completed dissertation will be considered for a one-year terminal appointment as a lecturer, with conversion to tenure track Assistant Professor, provided all requirements for the degree are completed by January 1, 2007. The Department and College: The Department of Exercise Science, Sport, Physical Education, and Recreation (ESPER, http://education.odu.edu/esper/) at Old Dominion University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Department Chair to begin July 25, 2006 or earlier. ESPER is one of five departments in the Darden College of Education (http://www.odu.edu/educ/education/index.html) and offers on-campus baccalaureate and master's degree programs in exercise science, health and physical education teacher preparation, recreation/tourism studies, and sport management as well as a master's degree program in athletic training.
