CFP: Girls & Women Rock: Celebrating 35 Years of Sport & Title IX
CALL FOR PAPERS
"Girls & Women Rock: Celebrating 35 Years of Sport & Title IX"
March 28-31, 2007
NCAA Women's Final Four Local Organizing Committee
The Wolstein Center, Cleveland State University, Cleveland, OH
Invitation to Submit:
The year 2007 marks the 35th anniversary of the passage of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972. During the three and a half decades since Title IX was signed into law, there has been a massive shift in societal attitudes toward girls and women in sport. The 2007 NCAA Women's Final Four, which will be hosted by the city of Cleveland, provides a fitting occasion for a symposium commemorating this important legislation.
As we celebrate the enormous gains made for girls and women in sport, we can also look to the future by addressing numerous contemporary concerns related to equity in sport, fitness, physical activity, and health for girls and women. Scholars, public policy makers, lawyers, and educators from a variety of disciplines are invited to submit paper (15-20 minutes) or poster abstracts addressing one or several of these themes:
- Socio-historical perspectives on girls and women in sport in the United States and around the world.

CALL FOR CONTRIBUTORS: Berkshire Encyclopedia of Extreme Sport
Call for contributors - Berkshire Encyclopedia of Extreme Sport
Berkshire Publishing Group is looking for authorities to write an article or two for the Berkshire Encyclopedia of Extreme Sport which Berkshire Publishing Group will be publishing later this year.
The goal of the book is to bring together in one volume all that we know about extreme sports, the fastest growing segment of the sports world. The volume will cover dozens of extreme sports—past and present, provide profiles of athletes and venues, and also cover the research literature on the nature of extreme sports.
This is an exciting opportunity to be part of the community of extreme sports specialists coming together to produce a comprehensive reference work combining modern extreme sports with historical and cross-cultural aspects, as well as an in-depth look at the meaning of extreme. We welcome contributions from authorities and enthusiasts on extreme sports and will be glad to provide you with detailed writing guidelines and sample articles.
We currently have articles available in Modern Extreme Sports (ranging between 2000-4000 words), Cross-cultural/Historical Extreme Sports (3000 words), Themes (4000 words), Biographies (500 words), and Venues/Locations (500 words).
All contributors assigned to write 2,500 words or more will receive a complimentary copy of the Berkshire Encyclopedia of Extreme Sport, which we expect to retail at about US$125, and those who write 6,000 words or more will also receive a modest honorarium or a complimentary volume or set of another Berkshire publication. All articles will be peer-reviewed by the board of editors under the direction of Douglas Booth and Holly Thorpe (University of Waikato, New Zealand), and authors will be fully acknowledged in the published work.
Please see the list of entries that remain unassigned at the bottom of this letter. If you are interested in writing any of the articles on the list, send a message indicating which article(s) you’re interested in writing, along with a paragraph about your position, experience in world sport, and major relevant publications (we do not need a CV at this stage), to our project coordinator, Cassie Lynch, at cassie@berkshirepublishing.com. ANNOUNCEMENT: The Sporting News
The Sporting News has announced that the company will move its St. Louis
offices, effective May 15. We will be relocating from 10176 Corporate
Square Drive in suburban St. Louis to 14500 South Outer Forty Road, also
in suburban St. Louis.
As a result of this move, the Sporting News Research Center has closed.
Unfortunately, we will not be able to accommodate researchers from
outside the company because of the configuration of the new office. We
will also lose some of our ability to answer queries by mail, telephone,
or email because some of our reference material will be placed in
off-site storage.
We will continue to license our photographs, but customers will not be
able to do photographic research in person.
We regret any inconvenience this may have for you.
I am still TSN’s Senior Managing Editor for Research. I will still be
writing the "Year in Review" essay for the Baseball Guide. I will still
edit the Complete Baseball Record and Fact Book.
As a company, we will continue to publish our weekly magazine, our
guides and registers, our yearbooks and our books, and we will continue
to produce our website.
In our new offices, we will create a virtual research center. Our goal
will be to support our writers and editors by doing most of the research
they need online.
Best,
Steve Gietschier

CONFERENCE: 2006 Film and History League Conference
Call for Papers
2006 Film and History League Conference
"The Documentary Tradition"
www.filmandhistory.org
AREA: Sport Documentaries
From the classic and controversial Olympia (1938, Leni Riefenstahl) to the
critical and commercial success of Murderball (2005: Rubin and Shapiro),
sport documentaries represent a significant if under researched aspect of
the documentary tradition. Certainly, documentary filmmakers have long
recognized the sporting domain, whether that be sporting events, athletes,
or sporting cultures, as fertile terrain for telling stories that reach an
audience well beyond the sports aficionado: Hoop Dreams (1994, James) for
example is in the top ten biggest grossing documentaries of all time.
Furthermore, sport documentaries also constitute an increasingly important
part of the burgeoning television sport channel output. As sport continues
to expand and permeate global cultural consciousness, documentaries will
continue to chronicle, critique and celebrate sport by offering us windows
and mirrors on this universal human endeavor.
How do we account for the Sport Documentary? How have particular sport
documentaries engaged with political and social issues, such as nationalism,
gender, race and sexuality? Is it the case that sporting events, as one
critic has argued, lie at the "actuality" end of the documentary spectrum?
Is it useful to talk of the sport documentary as a sub-genre of documentary
film? What is the relationship between: sport and the documentary; between
sport documentaries and sport fiction; and between sport documentaries and
mainstream sport programming? We are inviting submissions on all aspects of
sports documentaries. Deadline for submission is July 25, 2006.
The Film and History League conference details can be found at
www.filmandhistory.org. The meeting will run from 8-12 November, 2006 in
the Dolce Conference Center near the DFW airport. Many subject area venues
are listed on the web page.
