The Faculty of Kinesiology and Physical Education at the University of Toronto invites applications for a full‐time, tenure‐stream position in the area of “Social Determinants of Physical Activity and Sports Participation among Children and Youth”. The appointment will be at the rank of Assistant Professor and will commence on July 1, 2013.
We seek applications from candidates who hold a PhD or equivalent doctoral degree in the social determinants of physical activity from kinesiology, physical education, public health, social or behavioural sciences, cultural studies, or some related discipline. Examples of areas of interest include the study of facilitators of, and barriers to participation, and intersections with social determinants of healthy physical activity, interventions to enhance participation in physical activity and sport; and the social issues of power, equity and diversity. Interventions of interest may include those at the individual, group, community, and public policy levels.
This position offers excellent opportunities to develop independent research programs within a multidisciplinary environment. Collaboration with colleagues in the Faculty, University and related research community is strongly encouraged.
Candidates must have a PhD (or equivalent), a proven record of excellence in scholarship, experience with
multidisciplinary research, a well articulated research program and strong teaching experience. Post‐doctoral
training is highly desirable. The successful candidate will teach at the undergraduate and graduate levels in courses related to their expertise. Salary will be competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Race and Sport in Canada: Intersecting Inequalities marks the first anthology to explore intersections of race with the constructions of gender, sexuality, class, and ability within the context of Canadian sport settings.
Written by a collection of emerging and established scholars, this book is broadly organized into three interrelated areas: historical approaches to the study of race and sport in Canada; Canadian immigration and the study of race and sport; and the study of race and sport beyond Canada’s borders. Within these themes, a variety of relevant topics are discussed, including black football players in 20th century Canada, the structural barriers to sports participation faced by immigrants arriving to Atlantic Canada, and NCAA Scholarships and Canadian athletes.

Janelle Joseph is currently a Post-Doctoral Fellow at the School of Physical Education at the University of Otago in New Zealand. It is our distinct pleasure to open up the Call for Nominations for the 2012 NASSS Service Excellence Award. The award criteria is as follows.
As an academic society, the North American Society for the Sociology of Sport recognizes individuals who havemade an extraordinary contribution to the sociology of sport and/or service to NASSS. Criteria for what is deemed "distinguished" are necessarily somewhat open-ended. They might reference truly distinguished and long-termcontributions to: (a) NASSS directly; or (b) to the field of sport sociology more generally. Specifically, service as an elected officer of NASSS, by itself, is neither a sufficient nor required criterion. The nomination should encompass a one- to two-page letter that describes in some detail the reasons why NASSS should recognize the recipient. Nominations may be submitted by an individual or jointly by a group of individuals. The recipient need not be a member ofNASSS.

Professorship in Sports and Outdoor Life StudiesTelemark University College currently enrols about 6000 students and employs about 650 employees. The university college has four faculties and the teaching and research activities are located at campuses in Bø, Notodden, Porsgrunn and Rauland. The position reports to the Head of Department. The primary place of employment is Bø campus, but the successful applicant will also have some responsibilities at the Notodden campus.
The Department of Sports and Outdoor Life Studies at the college is one of the largest in the field in Norway and has a strong focus on a critical social science approach to sports and outdoor life research. The social role of sports and outdoor life and its significance, and the formation of meaning associated with the individual, are crucial. A common focus is the body in motion.
The Department embraces a range of fields from the natural sciences to phenomenology. Applicants must possess research expertise and experience in one of the following fields: sports / outdoor life and policies; outdoor life / sports and gender; outdoor life / sports and education; and sports or outdoor life as socio-cultural phenomena.
The responsibilities of the position will include teaching and supervision activities in Bachelor and Master’s programmes in social science and pedagogical subjects, as well as teaching and supervision activities in Master’s programmes in scientific theory and methodology.
Further, the responsibilities of the position will include research and development, including a special responsibility for initiating and developing research in the Department of Sports and Outdoor Life Studies, and in collaboration with physical education studies at the Faculty of Art, Norwegian Folk Culture & Teacher Education, and the University of Agder; this includes applying for external funding for research projects.
It is also expected that the professorship will contribute to the development of the doctoral programme in Cultural Studies, and also to the doctoral programme in Ecology; the teaching and supervision of doctoral students as well as research may be allocated to the position.
The position will also involve cultivating and expanding academic networks both nationally and internationally.
The position also includes administrative duties that fall under the general work requirement for all employees.
The successful applicant must be able to document research competence at an international level within the areas which the position covers. Submitted research work will form the basis for evaluating the applicant’s research competence.
The applicant should be dynamic, positive and be able to demonstrate a good ability to cooperate. Further, the applicant should have experience leading research projects and providing guidance at a high level. Experience in teaching, instruction and educational qualifications, and other relevant experience is also emphasized. In order to be appointed to a permanent position, the applicant must have completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Education; applicants who do not possess such pedagogical qualifications may be employed on the condition that they acquire such qualifications within three years of the date of their employment.

It is an aim of personnel policy that the academic staff should reflect the composition of the general population. SCHOLARSHIP: Graduate diversity
SCHOLARSHIP: GRADUATE DIVERSITY AWARD
In recognition of the recommendation made by the Racial Diversity Committee in the fall of 2003, the NASSS Conference Program Committee has implemented a scholarship for a graduate student who is a member of a racial or ethnic “minority” group. The purpose of the scholarship is to create a mechanism to identify racial and/or ethnic “minority” graduate students who are doing research in the area of sport sociology, and to provide a means of supporting their work and association with NASSS. The award is for $500 to be applied toward expenses associated with attendance at the NASSS 2012 Conference in New Orleans, LA (USA).
The application process and criteria for the scholarship are as follows:
*NASSS member and graduate student status
*Applicants must prepare a one-page essay, which addresses how they plan to contribute to the field of sociology of sport/physical activity.
*Essays should be submitted along with a recommendation from a faculty member who is familiar with the student’s work and aspirations.

The sixth annual Scholarly Colloquium on Intercollegiate Athletics will be held January
14-16, 2013, in conjunction with the NCAA Annual Convention in Grapevine, Texas.
The theme for this year’s colloquium is “Economic Inequality Within the NCAA.” The
conference will feature keynote speakers, formal reactions to each keynote, and
concurrent sessions of oral presentations and poster presentations.
Paper proposals should deal closely with issues related to the conference theme of
“Economic Inequality Within the NCAA.” Papers may highlight scholarship from the
sciences, social sciences, economics, humanities, or any number of professional fields
that are either directly or indirectly related to this theme within intercollegiate athletics.
Abstract Format & Submission Guidelines
To be considered for the refereed paper and poster sessions, authors must submit a
500-600 word abstract (in Microsoft Word) which conforms to the following format:

Sport is often at the centre of battles for rights to inclusion linked to class, race and gender, and this book explores struggles centred on disability in different cultural settings in Europe, North America, Africa, Asia and Oceania. It challenges oversights and assumptions about the ‘normal’ body, and describes how individual and organizational transformations can occur through sport. The abilities of a person are recognised and placed centre stage - instead of the individual being forgotten, excluded, or placed at the margins simply because they have a disability.
National, regional and global change is part of the shift to the rights based approach reflected in the 2006 UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. Making sport inclusive affects the accessibility of facilities, funding, the media, policies, programs, organisations, sponsors and spectators, and at the same time changes the cultural values of the wider society. It also raises issues about competition access and eligibility for ‘different’ and technologically enhanced ‘cyborg’ bodies, and for those most socially disadvantaged. Addressing these questions which ultimately touch on the real meaning of sport can lead to profound changes in people’s attitudes, and how sport is organized locally and globally.
Growth in the influential global organisations of the Paralympic Games, Special Olympics and Deaflympics is examined, as is the approach to disability in sport in both advantaged and resource poor countries. The embodied lives of persons with disabilities are explored utilizing new theoretical models, perspectives and approaches.

HISTORY
Barbara A. Brown was a professor of sport sociology at the University of Western Ontario from 1983 until 1990, when she died of cancer at the age of forty. Dr. Brown, who was President-Elect of NASSS at the time of her death, was widely recognized for her expertise on women in sport and leisure, her political commitment to extending girls' and women's opportunities for participation in sport, and her contributions to the development of a professional community of sport sociologists. She was also a dedicated mentor and teacher whose invaluable work with students is appropriately memorialized in the naming of this award for her.
INSTRUCTIONS
· Papers may not exceed 30 double-spaced pages, including notes, tables, and references (which also need to be double-spaced).
· Papers should be free of any reference to the author(s) in order to ensure blind review.
· Authors should follow a consistent style (e.g., APA) throughout the paper, and should include line numbers to facilitate reviewer comments.
· Authors should include a cover page with the title of the paper, their full contact information, institutional affiliation, degree program, advisor’s name and contact information, and award category for submission (master’s or doctoral).
ELIGIBILITY
· Authors MUST be members of NASSS at time of submission. Please be sure that your membership status is updated and current.
· Papers do not need to be submitted for presentation at the NASSS conference (though most are).
· Authors must be enrolled in a graduate program at the time their paper is submitted.
· Papers that have undergone formal, peer review for publication are not eligible for the contest.
· Papers must represent student-produced inquiry only. Limited input from supervisors (e.g., general feedback on structure and content, recommendations for editing) is acceptable, but papers on which supervisors have had substantial input (e.g., analysis of data, writing or rewriting of sections of the paper) are not eligible.
· The committee will accept one (1) submission per author.
· Papers that were previously submitted for consideration and not awarded may be resubmitted for consideration, provided the author and paper meet all other criteria.
· In the event that a co-authored paper is selected as winner, the authors will share the prize.
· When warranted, the committee will offer up to two (2) awards, one (1) for a Master’s Student and one (1) for a PhD student.
· Only papers deemed by the committee to be truly outstanding will be considered for the award, and thus there is a possibility that no awards will be given for either or both award categories (i.e. Master’s and PhD).
CRITERIA FOR EVALUATION
Papers will be evaluated on the following criteria:
· Explanation of Conceptual Framework
· Analytic Clarity and Currency
· Organization and Clarity of Expression
· Discussion or Interpretation
· Contribution to Knowledge-Impact
· Relevance to NASSS/field
· Adherence to Consistent Referencing Style (e.g., APA)
PRIZES
The award recipient(s) will receive up to $1000 towards their NASSS conference expenses, plus a waiver of the conference registration fee. The Student Paper Award Committee may also give up to two honorable
mentions in each category. Students receiving an honorable mention will have their conference registration fees waived. In addition, all authors will receive feedback on their papers, which will hopefully benefit the authors.
