Invitation to Submit:
In 2006, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) will celebrate its 100th anniversary. With the site for the NCAA Men’s Final Four set for Indianapolis, now home to the NCAA, there can be no better place to reflect on the challenges and possibilities presented by college sport in its unique relationship to higher education. The Drake Group, in collaboration with the Department of Physical Education at Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI), invites you to submit a paper abstract or a poster abstract for the 2006 conference and meeting to be held at University Place at IUPUI on Friday and Saturday, March 31-April 1, 2006. Scholars from a variety of disciplines are encouraged to submit their work examining issues related to the history of college sport, faculty role in college sport reform, college sport reform movements, and other related topics.
Please be aware that proposals for sessions and panels will also be accepted. We urge you to contact the program chair prior to the October 1st, 2005 if you are interested in organizing a panel or session.
Abstract Format and Submission:
Abstracts should be limited to 200 words and conform to the following requirements:
. 12 point Times New Roman font
. prepared in word or html
. presentation title (limited to 10 words)
. author (s) and institutional affiliation (s)
Abstracts will be reprinted and published in the Conference Abstracts as submitted. Thus, it is imperative that these guidelines be considered prior to submitting. Due to the difficulty in reading files, please do not use bold or italics. The simpler your submission is, the easier it will be to convert into a publishable form.

The 2006 Conference of the North American Society for Sport History will be held at the historic Hotel Colorado, Glenwood Springs, Colorado, May 19-22, 2006. (Information about accommodations and travel will be sent later.)
The Program Committee would like to encourage all NASSH members and others who are interested in sport history to think about research presentation possibilities for the conference. Please note that in order to present a paper, one must be a NASSH member in good standing. Abstracts may be submitted for individual papers or for complete sessions. In order to allow sufficient time for discussion, sessions should consist of no more than four presentations (or three presentations and a commentary). The following guidelines must be used in the preparation of session and individual paper proposals. All submissions will be adjudicated by the Program Committee (Stephen Wenn [Chair], Nancy Bouchier, Scott Martyn, and Jaime Schultz) according to their individual merit, contribution to the field, and potential contribution as components of the total program. Proposals that do not provide all the information requested will be returned to the author(s). The deadline for the submission of proposals is 1 November 2005.

Guidelines for Sessions:
1. Include names, phone numbers, postal and email addresses, and fax numbers of each session organizer and participants (presider, speakers, and commentator).
2. Include title and abstract of the session. The session abstract should include a discussion of its theme and argument, a description of the relationship among the papers and to the session theme, along with a statement about the significance of the session to our understanding of history (750-1000 words).
3. Abstracts of the individual papers, to include a discussion of the question(s) addressed in the papers, the evidence used, and a precise statement of the argument and conclusions (500-750 words).
4. Submit 4 copies of the complete proposal by 1 November 2005. (Early proposals are appreciated.)
5. Deadline for submission of papers to commentator(s) and to other members of the session is 1 April 2006.

1. Include author’s name, phone number, postal and email addresses, and fax number of the author.

The Department and College: The Department of Exercise Science, Sport, Physical Education, and Recreation (ESPER, http://education.odu.edu/esper/) at Old Dominion University is seeking qualified candidates for the position of Department Chair to begin July 25, 2006 or earlier. ESPER is one of five departments in the Darden College of Education (http://www.odu.edu/educ/education/index.html) and offers on-campus baccalaureate and master’s degree programs in exercise science, health and physical education teacher preparation, recreation/tourism studies, and sport management as well as a master’s degree program in athletic training. Future plans include emphasis areas in a newly approved Ph.D. in Education program. ESPER currently has 16 full-time faculty members; approximately 50 adjunct faculty members; eight department-funded graduate assistants; two administrative support employees; approximately 475 undergraduate majors; and approximately 85 graduate majors. A planned building renovation will include state-of-the-art instructional and research facilities. Old Dominion University is a Carnegie Foundation research-extensive institution focusing on becoming one of the top 100 public doctoral institutions.
Required Qualifications: Requirements include an earned doctorate in one of the disciplines offered in ESPER; eligibility for appointment as an associate or full professor; evidence of previous university leadership and administrative experience; significant involvement in appropriate professional associations; demonstrated commitments to diversity and faculty participation in program governance and decision-making; demonstrated record of grant procurement and scholarship in a focus area; evidence of effective teaching; and familiarity with ESPER academic programs.

FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES - CANADA
NEW FUNDING FOR SPORT PARTICIPATION RESEARCH IN CANADA
Sport Canada, in partnership with the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is very pleased to announce the launch of the Sport Canada Policy Research Program (SCPRP).
The SCPRP is designed to provide empirical evidence to gain a better understanding of sport participation in Canada; to inform those policies and programs intended to promote and enhance participation in sport in Canada; and to support and implement the Canadian Sport Policy (2002).
Sport Canada has entered into partnership with two of the major granting agencies in Canada, SSHRC and CIHR, in order to fund this research program. The Research Councils represent the ‘gold standard’ for peer-reviewed research in Canada, and Sport Canada is pleased to have entered into agreements to run the SCPRP through the regular grant programs of the two Councils.
Scholars from all disciplines in the social sciences and health sciences, together with those from the various sub-disciplines of physical education / kinesiology, are encouraged to apply.
The arrangements with SSHRC and CIHR are different, and the specific details of the SCPRP with each Research Council follow.

In addition, the SCPRP is intended to encourage research on sport participation in Canada by funding:
· Research release time in the case of funded SRG applications requesting released time but not receiving it from SSHRC;
· Research allowances of up to $10,000 in the case of SSHRC Doctoral awards funded by SSHRC; and
· Research allowances of up to $10,000 in the case of SSHRC Post-Doctoral awards funded by SSHRC.

The primary aim of this partnership is to encourage researchers to apply to CIHR for funding for research projects on matters related to sport participation and its enhancement of quality of life in Canada. In particular the following themes have been identified as priority areas for research funded through this program:
* research concerned with identifying and overcoming health barriers to participation in sport; and,
* research concerned with determining the health benefits and outcomes of participation in sport.
To achieve this goal Sport Canada and CIHR are announcing a Request for Applications (RFA) for Team Planning and Development Grants. These grants (up to $100,000 for one year) will provide opportunities for the support of planning and/or development activities of multidisciplinary and/or cross pillar research teams to address the sport participation priorities outlined above.
This support will enable researchers to meet, plan and execute pilot collaborative studies for the purpose of generating preliminary data for the team to be successful in CIHR open competitions or in future strategic proposals within CIHR /IMHA. A major target for future applications of teams with this envelope of pilot projects is the New Emerging Team grants (NET).
The SCPRP will also provide support within budgetary limitations, via the Priority Announcement program. This will support teams and individuals who were judged meritorious by CIHR review panels in its open competition, but that did not receive funding. The SCPRP will have the option to either fund the entire project (i.e., multi-year) or to provide bridge funding (i.e., 1 year) to allow the researcher to apply again in future competitions.

This will support teams and individuals who were judged meritorious by CIHR review panels in its open competition, but that did not receive funding. The SCPRP will have the option to either fund the entire project (i.e., multi-year) or to provide bridge funding (i.e., 1 year) to allow the researcher to apply again in future competitions.
