GRANT: World Anti-Doping Agency | Agence Mondiale Antidopage

Montreal, 29 May 2006 - For the third year, WADA invites applications for its
Social Science Research Grant Program. This Program encourages research in the
social sciences to obtain information which will enable more efficient doping
prevention strategies.

All proposals submitted must be related to one or more of the stated Program
priorities. WADA awards research grants to organizations of all types
(universities, colleges, small businesses, for-profit or not-for-profit
organizations, etc.). Deadline for submission for the 2007 competition is August
31, 2006.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) is the international independent
organization created in 1999 to promote, coordinate and monitor the fight
against doping in sport in all its forms. The Agency is composed and funded
equally by the sports movement and governments of the world. Its key activities
include scientific research, education, out-of-competition testing, development
of anti-doping capacities and monitoring of the World Anti-Doping Code – the
first document harmonizing regulations regarding anti-doping in all sports and
all countries.

AWARD: NASSS Book Award 2006

North American Society for the Sociology of Sport Book Award 2006

The North American Society for the Sociology of Sport invites nominations for its annual book award. Nominations may be submitted via mail, email, or fax, and must be received by June 1tst, 2006. The winner of the award will be announced at the Annual Meeting of NASSS in Vancouver, November 1-4, 2006.

Nomination Criteria:

a) books must be scholarly analyses of a sport related issue or phenomenon written from a sociological, anthropological, or related perspective;
b) books must have been published between 2004-06;
c) books may be re-nominated in a subsequent year if published during the appropriate dates;
d) books from authors who are not NASSS members are eligible.

Conference: Researching Youth Sport: Diverse Perspectives

On Wednesday 20th September 2006 the Institute of Youth Sport and the
Institute of Sport and Leisure Policy, Loughborough University, are hosting
a conference on 'Researching Youth Sport: Diverse Perspectives'. The
conference will examine research across a wide range of themes including
youth development through sport, youth sport and diversity, youth sport and
inclusion, promoting physical activity among young people, and the use of
sport in international development. We are pleased to be joined by The
Chelsea School, University of Brighton, who will be offering a specialist
theme on 'Lifestyle Sports'. We are delighted to have secured a strong
line-up of presenters with extensive and diverse experience and we hope that
you and your colleagues will be able to join us for what promises to be a
day of stimulating and high quality debate.

SCHOLARSHIP: Social Science and Drugs in Sport

Social Science and Drugs in Sport

UNSW@ADFA is providing a PhD scholarships to support social science research
into the use of drugs in sport.

Choice Modelling: In this project, choice modelling is used to study athletes’
decisions to use performance enhancing substances. The supervisors’ backgrounds
are in applied economics (choice modelling) and health/social/mathematical
psychology. The project aims to develop an experimentally derived model of
factors that drive athletes’ decisions to abstain from or use performance
enhancing substances and methods.

Applicants from any social science background will be considered. This project
would be more suited to some one quantitatively minded, or some one willing to
learn more about quantitative methods in the social sciences.

Aims and Concept:

The summer school is addressed to PhD students and young researchers and intends to support them in their scientific work. It offers them the opportunity of acquiring knowledge about the state of the art in the area of theories and methods, of presenting their research, of discussing problems, of obtaining advice from experts and of building up a network. It is hoped to help young researchers to become integrated into the scientific community. The topic “Sport, Globalisation and Cultural Diversity” will be approached from the perspective of humanities and social sciences (including history, pedagogy and psychology). The topic will be addressed also from a gender, a race and a class perspective.

The involvement of internationally renowned experts will guarantee that knowledge and advice as well as the evaluation of students’ papers will contribute decisively to research of high quality and relevance.

Organisation:

In keynote lectures the experts will address important questions, new approaches and results, problems and strategies of research, current trends and main issues in the area of sport and the body. The students will have the opportunity of asking questions and discussing with the experts. In addition, students have the opportunity to give a report of their own projects. Papers with the main outlines of these projects must be submitted before the summer school begins. There will be an in-depth discussion of each research project in working groups. In addition, the experts are available for individual supervision.

Selection of the students:

The summer school will take place in collaboration with the International Societies for Sport History, Sport Sociology and the European Federation of Sport Psychology. Each of these organisations can select and send students to the summer School.

Participants should be young researchers (either planning a PhD, working on their PhD or post docs). The participants may work in different disciplines from pedagogy to history. Participants will be selected according to the following criteria: state of their research, quality of the project.

The number of participants will be between 20 and 25; it is aimed to include students from as many countries as possible.


The application should contain the following information:

ISSA Grants for Young Researchers:

The International Sport Sociological Association (ISSA) can support the participation of two students in the Summer School with 500 Euro each. Students, who do not get support for travel and accommodation from their school, can apply for this grant. Candidates are to submit together with their application for participation a paper, where they describe their doctoral project (max. 3,000 words). In addition, they should send information about the cost of their travel.

Sport Studies: The University of Iowa Department of Health and Sport Studies invites applications for a non-tenure track lecturer position in sport studies for the academic year 2006-2007. The position is renewable for a total of three years (2006-2009) and renewable thereafter in three year increments pending demonstrated excellence in teaching and collegiate approval. Duties will include teaching and advising undergraduate students in the sport studies area. We seek someone who can teach several of the following courses: sport and the media, inequality in sport, women and sport, twentieth century sport, US sport to 1900, or sport in the western world. Ability to teach a graduate course in philosophy of sport or in athletic administration would be an asset. Applicants with an earned doctorate in sport studies or a related field are preferred but applicants in the final stages of a doctoral program will also be considered. Some teaching experience is expected. The Department of Health and Sport Studies is part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. Our undergraduate program in sport studies draws on a range of social science and humanities contexts to focus on sport and physical activity within their cultural and historical context. The department has a strong commitment to diversity in our curriculum and our faculty. We are particularly interested in identifying members of underrepresented minorities to join us at Iowa.

The journal Junctures: The Journal for Thematic Dialogue is calling for submissions from any discipline providing an insight on the themes of “Play” and “Control.” Members of this list are invited to submit scholarly papers, creative work and commentary around these themes.

Junctures is peer-reviewed and published two times a year in December and June by Otago Polytechnic in Dunedin, New Zealand. It aims to engage discussion across boundaries, whether these be geographic or disciplinary.
