Department: The Department of Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics (HPERA) at Northeastern Illinois University offers the Bachelor of Arts in undergraduate Secondary Physical Education (6-12), Health and Wellness, and a Master of Science in Exercise Science. The programs are accredited by the National Council of Accreditation of Teacher Education as well as the State of Illinois. Eleven full time faculty members teach daytime classes for undergraduates and evening classes for the graduate program.

Responsibilities: The chairperson is the chief administrative officer for the department and is responsible for supervising three programs (Health Education, Physical Education, and graduate Exercise Science). Class scheduling, budgets, hiring staff, and representing the department on college and university committees are integral parts of the position.

Qualifications: Minimal qualifications include: earned doctorate from an accredited institution in an area related to departmental programs with consideration given to candidates with expertise in exercise physiology, record of teaching, research, experience with teacher certification and NCATE requirements, and evidence of ability to lead a vibrant department. Recommended experience in diverse settings. Active involvement in state and national organizations is a plus.
