CONFERENCE: “Sporting Sounds”

“Sporting Sounds”
A Conference on Sport and Music
To be held at the University of Aarhus, Denmark
27 – 28 September 2006

This conference aims to promote discussion and debate around the multifaceted interface of sport and music. Although scholars have begun to examine the important relationship between sport and the fields of literary and artistic production, little attention has been given to the long-standing links between organised sport and music. This is a serious academic oversight given the vital role of music in the performance, reception and commodification of sport. Advocating a broad and pluralistic definition of music that includes anything from soccer chants to opera, the conference will provide scholars from a variety of academic disciplines with a unique opportunity to explore this hitherto neglected element of sporting culture. Abstracts for papers on all aspects of the relationship between sport and music are welcome but topics could include ‘sport in music’, ‘music in sport’, ‘music and spectator culture’, ‘music, sport and commodification’, ‘music and sporting performance’ and ‘sporting lyrics’.

Aarhus is on the east coast of the Jutland peninsular. There are cheap, direct flights by RyanAir from London (Stanstead) to Aarhus. There is a wide range of accommodation, details of which can be found via Google by entering “Visit Aarhus”. Of the hotels listed there we would suggest the City Sleep-In (cheap), Villa Provence, the Ritz (Best Western – very central), Comfort Hotel, Helnen Marselis Hotel (less central), SAS Radison (more expensive). The conference is being organised on a minimal budget and we cannot offer any financial support for travel, subsistence or accommodation. However, there is no registration fee.

Aarhus is the second largest city in Denmark and is an excellent place for a weekend break. It is a very walkable city with local beaches and forests. The city has fine museums, galleries and restaurants.
