JOB: Director Position at Southern Mississippi


Announcement of Director Position
Academic Year 2013-14

The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for the position of director, School of Human Performance and Recreation, a 12-month, tenure-track, senior faculty-administrator appointment beginning July 1, 2013.
The School of Human Performance and Recreation is part of the College of Health. The School of HPR is a dual-campus, multidisciplinary academic unit offering the Bachelor of Science, the Master of Science and the doctorate degree. Degree programs/emphases include Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Kinesiotherapy, Physical Education, Recreation Administration, Sport Coaching Education, Therapeutic Recreation and Sport Management. The school currently employs 26 full-time faculty and eight graduate assistants. Current
enrollment is approximately 900 undergraduate and 100 graduate students. As the largest unit in the College of Health, the school carries significant responsibility for advancing the college’s vision of promoting human health and well-being in Mississippi and throughout the Gulf South region. Candidates must have (1) an earned doctorate in or closely related to one of the school’s disciplines, (2) broad knowledge of all the discipline areas, (3) a successful administrative record of leading accredited baccalaureate and/or graduate programs, (4) a substantive record of teaching, scholarship and service that merits appointment at the rank of associate or full professor, and (5) experience in developing and/or managing externally funded projects.
As the chief administrative officer of the school, the director is directly responsible for managing departmental business processes, developing and evaluating faculty, encouraging research, establishing and sustaining standards of instruction, evaluating instruction, and making recommendations to the dean on a range of matters – all in a context of academic shared governance.
