Fighting Women: A Symposium on Women's Boxing

The legacy of women’s boxing, including women fighting for financial gain, traces back to the first
half of the 18th century. Yet women’s amateur boxing only became legalized in many parts of the
Americas in the 1990s. There are now over 120 international boxing federations with registered
female competitors, and the debut of women’s boxing at the London Olympics placed it on an
international stage.

This two-day symposium seeks to explore the diverse ways women have participated in amateur
and professional boxing. The purpose will be to investigate women’s involvement in boxing in its
broadest sense, from historical, ethnographic, cultural, and artistic perspectives. This cross-genre
approach hopes to take into account the multiple, often intersecting, aspects of this exploitative and
dysfunctional, yet equally compelling and beautiful, sport.

“Fighting Women” encourages presentations from diverse fields of study, including physical
cultural studies, women and gender studies, history, media and communications, film studies,
sociology, visual artists, and filmmakers, among others. Topics may include, but are certainly not
limited to:

Program Overview
The foundation of our new Ph.D. program in Kinesiology is a community-based focus recognized as ensuring the wellbeing of both individuals and the collective at the local, national, and international levels. Graduates will be prepared to provide the resources necessary to sustain the community and will be able to supply current, novel ideas, and knowledge. This community-based focus in a Kinesiology program is not represented in any other existing program in Canada. Students will be required to complete four courses, one of which is a community-based internship. The internship will encourage the integration of our students into ongoing community initiatives, enhance responsibility for meeting the needs of others while improving overall well-being of Canadians, and encourage students to utilize previously acquired skills, while gaining new skills, appropriate to their internship setting.

Academic Goal
The main goal of the Ph.D. program in Kinesiology is to allow students interested in the movement science or socio-cultural aspects of Kinesiology to develop excellence in designing, conducting and disseminating research knowledge to the broader community including: the workplace; sport, teaching, and leisure environments; and exercise, physical activity, and rehabilitation settings.

Competitive Financial Support
In addition to other sources of funding, all doctoral students will be guaranteed Graduate Assistantships of no fewer than the equivalent of seven full terms of support.

Projected Enrolment
The projected enrolment for September 2013, and each of the next four years, is four students. Projected steady-state student enrolment for the PhD Program in Kinesiology is sixteen doctoral students.

Scientific Programme: Unifiying Sport Science

We have built an enviable congress programme covering the full range of disciplines in Sport and Exercise Sciences as well as sport medicine. We have attracted an eminent team of international speakers from Europe and around the globe to deliver our Plenary and Invited Sessions.

Young Investigators Award sponsored by Mars Inc.
 One of the key objectives of the ECSS is the promotion of junior scientists and the fostering of state-of-the-art research. For this purpose the ECSS established the Young Investigators Award (YIA). Again in Barcelona the Young Investigators Award will be a key highlight of the Congress.

GSSI Nutrition Award
 Abstracts submitted in the area of nutrition may opt in to apply for the GSSI Nutrition Award during the abstract submission process. The winner will be awarded during the closing ceremony of the congress.
 

Workshops
 EWSS 2013 – 'Scientific Grants' at ECSS Barcelona 2013
 At ECSS Barcelona 2013 the EWSS will be addressed to young researchers at the starting point of their career. The ECSS would like to help promote their scientific careers by introducing possibilities to fund scientific projects. Attendees will get an overview of the multitude of European scientific grants and how to apply for those. In addition a best practice example shall be introduced.

Travel to Barcelona
 • By Plane: Barcelona has a large international and domestic airport with frequent direct flights from most international destinations. More than 125 airlines operate from Barcelona International Airport (BCN), being only 20 minutes away from the congress venue.
• By Tain: The high-speed train AVE connects Barcelona with the European rail network via Madrid within 2.5 hours.
• By Car: Barcelona may be reached from several destinations. It is approximately a 90 minute drive from the French boarder to Barcelona.
• Public transportation around Barcelona: Barcelona has an excellent underground system including eight metro lines, a frequent bus network and more than 11,000 reasonably priced taxis.

ECSS and Gatorade Sports Science Institute promote the “GSSI Young Scholar Travel Grant”. This travel grant is offered to young scholars from “outside of Europe” to attend the annual ECSS congress. Young researchers (32 years of age or younger at the time of ECSS Barcelona 2013 (born after 29th June 1980)) working in the field of sports nutrition and hydration are encouraged to apply by submitting a CV, publication list and letter of motivation to the ECSS. ECSS membership is mandatory. All applications will undergo thorough review. Four candidates shall be receiving a grant of two Thousand Euro (2.000 €) each, to cover travel expenses to the 18th annual congress of the European College of Sport Science – ECSS Barcelona 2013.

Accommodation

As tourists throughout the year intensively visit Barcelona, the ECSS has negotiated a large number of hotel rooms at attractive group rates in several categories of hotel ranging from budget to 5 star hotels. These rates are only available through the congress website.

You will find that all of these hotels offer quality lodging including breakfast. Most hotels have car park facilities. Barcelona is also very popular with youngsters and a large number of cheap youth hostels are located within walking distance, providing the delegates a general impression of Barcelona’s’ architectural and historic splendour.

Sport, as an institution, has historically been behind the times when it comes to issues related to the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community. But a growing push for social justice in sport has begun to transform cultural attitudes. On National Coming Out Day, October 11, Drexel University’s Goodwin College for Professional Studies will launch a research and activism network, “LGBT Issues in Sport: Theory to Practice,” which aims to be the definitive resource for research on LGBT issues in sport.
The website will provide public access to research focusing on LGBT issues in sport, with the goal of turning theory into practice in order to make sport more inclusive for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals. The site also will serve as a resource for sharing research that has been vetted through peer-reviewed processes to facilitate a greater awareness of work being done in this field and connect researchers and activists in order to impact public policy and education.
Founded by Dr. Ellen Staurowsky, a professor of sport management in Drexel’s Goodwin College for Professional Studies, along with colleagues from the Pennsylvania State University and Texas A&M University, the website was conceived of in response to goals identified at the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity in Sport (SOGIS) Conference hosted by Texas A&M in April 2012 and the Nike LGBT Sports Summit at Nike World Headquarters in June 2012.
“The LGBT Issues in Sport: Theory to Practice blog is an initiative that manifests Drexel’s aspirations to engage the public in informed dialogue to cultivate an inclusive, socially just community,” said Staurowsky. “One of our shared values as a university is diversity, the benefit of which lies in fostering understanding, respect and opportunity. We hope to achieve this goal, in part, through inspired and transformational research collaborations and projects such as this venture.”
More than 20 experts and activists from around the country have agreed to contribute regularly to the website, sharing their perspectives on issues that affect athletes, coaches and administrators at U.S. colleges and universities. They will make significant contributions to the dialogue around homophobia and sexual prejudice in college sport with the ultimate goal of eradicating the hostile climate for sexual minorities in sport within the next five years.

“Ending the homophobia that has silenced lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender athletes and coaches for decades is the ambitious vision of those who attended the Summit,” said website co-founder and participant in the Nike LGBT Sports Summit Susan Rankin, a research associate in the Center for the Study of Higher Education and associate professor of education in the College Student Affairs Program at The Pennsylvania State University. “This website provides an outlet for activists and researchers to support that vision by providing public access to dialogue around these issues.”
Staurowsky is internationally recognized as an expert on social justice issues in sport which include gender equity and Title IX, pay equity and equal employment opportunity, the exploitation of athletes, the faculty role in reforming college sport, representation of women in sport media, and the misappropriation of American Indian imagery in sport. She is co-author of the book, College Athletes for Hire: The Evolution and Legacy of the NCAA Amateur Myth.

The University of Southern Mississippi invites applications for the position of director, School of Human Performance and Recreation, a 12-month, tenure-track, senior faculty-administrator appointment beginning July 1, 2013.
The School of Human Performance and Recreation is part of the College of Health. The School of HPR is a dual-campus, multidisciplinary academic unit offering the Bachelor of Science, the Master of Science and the doctorate degree. Degree programs/emphases include Athletic Training, Exercise Science, Kinesiotherapy, Physical Education, Recreation Administration, Sport Coaching Education, Therapeutic Recreation and Sport Management. The school currently employs 26 full-time faculty and eight graduate assistants. Current
enrollment is approximately 900 undergraduate and 100 graduate students. As the largest unit in the College of Health, the school carries significant responsibility for advancing the college’s vision of promoting human health and well-being in Mississippi and throughout the Gulf South region. The Department of Educational Leadership is seeking a candidate for a full-time, tenure-track
faculty position at the rank of assistant professor in sport management beginning August 2013.
The successful candidate will be expected to develop or continue a sustainable line of research
within sport management, advise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, engage in
collaborative research opportunities with faculty in sport management and interdisciplinary
research within educational leadership and across the university, pursue extramural funding
support for the program and/or research, establish working relationships with related programs
and organizations both on and off campus, teach sport management classes at the undergraduate,
master’s, and doctoral level.

Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: An earned doctorate in sport management by time of appointment.
Candidates must have potential for success in conducting research, student advising, and
teaching undergraduate and graduate courses within a sport management curriculum. Candidates
must demonstrate the ability to mentor undergraduate and graduate students, develop collegial
relationships, and possess strong interpersonal skills.

Preferred Qualifications: Preference will be given to candidates with strong reputations and
records of both national and international presentations within sport management scholarly
associations, publications in refereed journals (with an emphasis in sport related journals), and
pursuit of extramural funding. In particular, the program seeks applicants who take a critical
approach to their research and teaching with a focus on sport as a platform for social change.
Candidates with demonstrated use of technology in the classroom and/or experience in online
instruction are preferred. Experience with mentoring students, with particular emphasis on
doctoral level advisement, is also preferred.

Appointment Terms: This is a nine-month, tenure-track position. Salary will be commensurate
with qualifications and experience.

JOB: Physical Education Teacher Education - University of the Pacific

Assistant Professor of Health, Exercise, & Sport Sciences (Physical Education Teacher Education)
The Department of Health, Exercise, & Sport Sciences at the University of the Pacific invites applications for a tenure-track, assistant professor position in Physical Education Teacher Education (PETE) for fall 2013.

Position Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be the primary instructor in the physical education teacher education program and may also teach a section of Pacific Seminar in the University's general education program. Standard teaching loads consist of five courses per year. The position will include supervision of student teaching and leadership of Tiger P.R.I.D.E., an after-school physical activity program for high-need youth in local elementary schools. The position requires advising, University service, departmental representation and the maintenance of a research agenda in the field.

Qualifications
A doctorate in physical education, exercise science, kinesiology, or related field is required at the time of appointment (ABD considered with defense date prior to August 2013). Also essential is the ability to teach undergraduate courses in Team & Individual Sports, Non-traditional & Alternative Sports, Instructional Strategies of Teaching/Coaching, and Secondary Physical Education and possibly Elementary Physical Education. Strong preference will be given to candidates with evidence of successful K-12 teaching and knowledge of California credentialing standards. Experience working with diverse student populations, a record of scholarly publications, and participation in professional organizations are also desired. We are particularly interested in candidates whose experience in teaching, research, or community service has prepared them to contribute to our commitment to diversity and excellence.

Departmental Description
The Department of Health, Exercise, & Sport Sciences has 10 faculty members serving approximately 275 undergraduate and 20 graduate students. The program features undergraduate degrees in Health, Exercise, & Sport Sciences and Athletic Training and a Master of Arts in Health,
Exercise, & Sport Sciences. The department operates Tiger P.R.I.D.E., an after-school physical activity program for high-need youth and the Pacific Fatigue Laboratory, a leading center for research on Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic Encephalomyelitis (CFS/ME).

This conference represents the collaborative efforts of graduate students from Ohio State University,
Penn State University, and University of Western Ontario designed to stimulate scholarship in the
historical, philosophical and sociocultural approaches to studying sport. As a student-led initiative, this annual meeting aims to strengthen our academic community and foster intellectual development across the many disciplines within sport studies.


ABSTRACT SUBMISSION DEADLINE: November 16, 2012

We invite paper proposals for the 2nd annual Tri-University Conference to be held in 2013 at Penn
State University. Not restricted to any particular theme, paper proposals may relate to any issue within sport researched from an historical, philosophical, or sociocultural perspective. This conference aims at promoting the scholarly growth and academic networking of emerging scholars, and particularly graduate students. However, faculty members and other qualified scholars are strongly encouraged to attend in order to contribute to and to support these goals through providing constructive feedback and skilled appraisals of the conference’s student generated scholarship. Please submit only original research for consideration.

ABSTRACT FORMAT AND SUBMISSION REQUIREMENTS:
Authors must send their abstract in an email attachment and include the following information:
