Position: Assistant Professor of Sport Studies/ Sport Management

The Department of Kinesiology, Sports Studies, and Physical Education (KSSPE) at The College at Brockport – SUNY is seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Sport Studies/ Sport Management to begin August, 2013.

Background: The Department of KSSPE maintains the largest student enrollment on campus and houses five majors (Athletic Training, Exercise Physiology, Kinesiology, Physical Education Teacher Education, and Sport Management). Duties: 1) Teach undergraduate and/or graduate courses in Sport Studies and/or Sport Management and oversee graduate culminating projects; 2) maintain an active program of scholarship; and 3) provide service to the college.

Required Qualifications: 1) An earned doctorate degree in Sport Studies and/or Sport Management-related field (ABD candidates will be considered, but must earn their doctoral degree within 6 months of hire); 2) the ability to teach courses in Sport Studies and/or Sport Management; 3) the ability to teach a diverse student body; 4) the ability to develop and maintain an active research agenda; and 5) the ability to provide service to the college.

Preferred Qualifications: 1) Previous college level teaching experience in Sport Studies and/or Sport Management; 2) ability to teach a broad range of undergraduate and graduate courses in Sport Studies and/or Sport Management such as History of Sport, Sport and Society, Psychology of Sport, Coaching, Administrative Practices, Research Marketing, Promotions, Public Relations, Administrations of Intramurals, and others depending upon the expertise of the individual; 3) previous record of publications in a sport studies field.

"Moving Biopolitics"

Who is claiming the body? Who claims how we should know the body, its uses, and its effects? Whose interests intercede upon our everyday lives, and the everyday uses of our own individual bodies? In keeping with the mission of Cultural Studies<=>Critical Methodologies to provide an explicit forum for the intersections of cultural studies, critical interpretive research methodologies, and cultural critique, we solicit contributions which seek to achieve and/or address at least one (and ideally all three) of the following goals as they relate to conceptions of 'moving biopolitics':

1) advance the critical interrogation of the biopolitics of human 'movement' – extending, through empirical and/or theoretical exploration, those issues raised by the likes of Foucault, Agamben, Rose, Kristeva, Clough, and Esposito (and many others) around technologies of bioscientific and biotechnological control (particularly how they relate to active forms of embodiment and physical culture, broadly conceived);

2) Explore ways in which we might 'move' within (or out of) regimes and systems of biopolitical subjectivity (see, e.g., Hardt & Negri, Nancy, and others), and explore how we might move biopolitics, move with(in) biopolitics, and move against contemporary (neoliberal) biopolitics?;

3) Utilize evocative, emotive, 'moving' methods of writing, representation, and performance to bring to light contemporary biopolitical struggles, contestations, and power relations – producing creative interplays between bodies and texts, the theoretical and sensual, research techniques and bodily pleasure.

Abstracts of no more than 250 words should be submitted jointly to Michael Giardina (mgiardina@fsu.edu) and Joshua Newman (jinewman@fsu.edu) by 1 October, 2012. Those invited to contribute will be expected to submit full papers in January 2013.

MASTER: Sport for Social Coexistenc​e and Conflict Resolution (Spain)

Master in Sport for Social Coexistence and Conflict Resolution

The UNESCO-FFCB-UOC Chair is offering an online Master in Sport for Social Coexistence and Conflict Resolution from November 2012.

Fair play, discipline, teamwork, respect, leadership, cooperation, responsibility, etc. are values seen in the world of sport and in human relations.

UNESCO, the Futbol Club Barcelona Foundation and the Open University of Catalonia UOC have joined forces to create a new Chair in Sport as a tool for Social Coexistence and Conflict Resolution, an important initiative in both academia and sports, with the aim to promote social harmony and peaceful conflict resolution through sport.
The Chair will offer a Master in Sport for Social Coexistence and Conflict Resolution from 6th November 2012, which will be taught In English and in Spanish through the UOC's online university.
The Master meets the educational needs of new profiles in the management of socio-educational work based on sport, taking UN Millenium Development Goals (MDGs) as its background.
The Chair provides procedures, attitudes and skills so that students can analyse and apply the possibilities for using sport as a tool for educational intervention and transmission of values in contexts with low levels of social coexistence and high levels of conflict.
The Course will be taught by internationally renowned staff.

Course structure
The UOC is an internationally recognised online university with a dynamic and flexible model.
The Masters is taught online, reaching any student with an interest in the field of sport for development and peace and facilitating the studies at any time of the day and from any place in the world.
The Masters degree comprises of two Postgraduates and an individual project or dissertation.
This course offers the opportunity to become a trainer for peace and social cohesion, focusing on areas as education, gender, youth, disability, social coexistence, conflict resolution, Olympic values, Human Rights and media, among others.

There are no admission requirements for access to the program. If you already have an officially recognised university qualification, you will obtain a Master's diploma.

Pre-NASSS: "Culture and the Active Body: Toward Interdisciplinary Action"

Dear colleagues,

We are proud to announce the launch of the Center for Physical Cultural Studies at Florida State University. The Center aims to provide a collaborative focal point from which faculty and students in sport studies, communication, sociology, and the medical sciences can explore how cultures of the moving body--as produced in various sport, athletic, and performance-based contexts--create identity, power and knowledge, equality and inequality, disparate health outcomes, and opportunity and limitations for various populations. 

In conjunction with the launch of the Center, we are hosting a pre-NASSS symposium on November 5-6 in Tallahassee, Florida, on the theme "Culture and the Active Body: Toward Interdisciplinary Action". Confirmed plenary speakers include: David Andrews, John Amis, Michael Atkinson, Michele Donnelly, Mark Falcous, Billy Hawkins, Shannon Jette, Ryan King-White, and Richard Pringle. We will also be screening the documentary film Pink Ribbons, Inc., based on the book of the same title by Samantha King. The symposium is free and open to the public. The sixth annual Scholarly Colloquium on Intercollegiate Athletics will be held January 14-16, 2013, in conjunction with the NCAA Annual Convention in Grapevine, Texas.  The theme for this year’s colloquium is “Economic Inequality Within the NCAA.” The conference will feature keynote speakers, formal reactions to each keynote, and concurrent sessions of oral presentations and poster presentations.

Paper proposals should deal closely with issues related to the conference theme of “Economic Inequality Within the NCAA.” Papers may highlight scholarship from the sciences, social sciences, economics, humanities, or any number of professional fields that are either directly or indirectly related to this theme within intercollegiate athletics.

Abstract Format & Submission Guidelines
To be considered for the refereed paper and poster sessions, authors must submit a 500-600 word abstract (in Microsoft Word) which conforms to the following format:

Auburn University at Montgomery announces a tenure-track appointment as an Assistant Professor of Sport Management beginning Spring 2013. This is a full-time, nine month position with opportunities for summer teaching. A Ph.D./Ed.D. in Sport Management or closely related field is required. ABD status will be considered. Responsibilities include teaching undergraduate and graduate sport management and related physical education/exercise science courses, as well as, supervising interns. Such courses may include Sport Finance, Sport Leadership, Introduction to Sport Management, Sport Marketing, Sport Ethics, Risk and Legal Issues in Sport, etc. Familiarity with COSMA accreditation is essential.
